Town to Edgemont: Sue us
On Monday, the Town Board held a hearing on the Shelbourne special permit. This is the last step before building permits are issued.
There is ongoing litigation over the zoning board's decision to issue variances for this project. The Town's own laws restrict assisted living facilities to sites within 200 feet of Central Avenue. The proposed site is more than 6,000 feet from Central Avenue.
In ignoring its own law, and refusing to adequately study the health and safety impacts of its 3,000% variance, the Town has thumbed its nose at Edgemont residents and our Greenville Fire District, the primary responder to the would-be facility.
Further, all residents of unincorporated should be concerned that the Town, when convenient, will run roughshod over zoning laws that are intended to maintain neighborhood character and promote safety.
Why would a governing body proceed on a matter where its very own residents have brought litigation and the entire community is waiting for the Court's decision? Constituents asked that obvious question on Monday. The Town's response?
Sue us.
